After a 12-year gap between television series, "Star Trek" has finally back to television with a new ship, a new crew and a previously unexplored part of canon to unfold. Star Trek: Discovery is a direct prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series. The new tv series take place approximately 10 years before the original Star Trek series, placing it somewhere around 2254. Star Trek: Discovery, the sixth TV series in the franchise, follows the story of the USS Discovery crew during the cold war between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingons, but it also address the latter’s perspective as well.

Sonequa Martin-Green, best known for playing Sasha in The Walking Dead, stars as Michael Burnham, the crew’s First Officer of USS Shenzhou and later the USS Discovery, who despite her human make-up was raised as a Vulcan. Burnham being the lead character of the series and it marks the first Star Trek series to feature a First Officer as the lead character. The series is to feature the Klingon T'Kuvma attempting to unite the 24 great Klingon houses, leading to a cold war between his race and the United Federation of Planets. Rest of the cast includes Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, and Jason Isaacs.

Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts serve as showrunners on the series, with producing support from Akiva Goldsman. The producers have clearly spared no budgetary expense as an episode costs US$8–8.5 million. 'Star Trek: Discovery' pilot became one of the most pirated TV episodes in less than 24 hours. Star Trek: Discovery has won over a sizable audience since it first debuted on September 24th. The series got positive reviews from critics who highlighted Martin-Green's performance, as well as the series' production value and its new additions to Star Trek story line.

Star Trek is one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time. It is noted for its cultural influence beyond works of science fiction.
