Tractor Swept Away in Karaitivu Floods, Five Children Missing

In a tragic turn of events, a tractor reportedly carrying nine people, including children, was swept away by floodwaters in Karaitivu this evening.

It has been reported that the driver and assistant of the tractor, along with five children, remain missing, while two children were rescued.

The incident occurred as the group attempted to navigate through a heavily flooded area. Rescuers managed to save two children, who have since been admitted to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) stated that the exact number of children and adults on the vehicle has not yet been confirmed, as search and rescue operations continue.

Accordidng to the Police, 13 individuals, including 11 boys, the tractor driver, and an assistant, were on board the vehicle at the time of the incident. Five children were rescued.

The tractor, travelling from Ninthavur to Sammanthurai, overturned due to strong currents in floodwaters.

The incident occurred near the bridge close to the Karaitivu bus stand as the students were returning home from a Madrasa school in Ninthavur.

The missing children are aged between 12 and 16.
