Deep Depression's Impact on Sri Lanka's Weather Expected to Reduce After Today

November 29, 2024

The Meteorology Department says that the deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal, located approximately 240 km northeast of Trincomalee and 290 km east of Kankasanthurai as of 11:30 PM on November 28, is expected to move northwest towards the Tamil Nadu coast.

The department predicts that the weather system's influence on Sri Lanka will gradually decrease after today (November 29).

However, showers or thundershowers are expected to continue at times in the Northern and North-Central provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee district. Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely in some areas of the Northern Province.

Other regions, including the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces, as well as the Galle, Matara, Matale, and Kandy districts, will experience intermittent rainfall. Evening or nighttime showers or thundershowers are forecast for several other areas of the island.

Strong winds reaching speeds of up to 60 kmph may occur in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, Eastern, Central, and Southern provinces.
