One of the most popular and controversial singers in the Sri Lankan music industry, Sunil Perera or more affectionatly called 'Sunil aiya', turns sixty five today.
Born on 14 September 1952, continues to bring novelty and entertainment to the Sri Lankan fans as the lead of the famous 'Gypsies'. After completing studies at St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa and St. Peter’s College, Colombo, Sunil joined the Gypsies 1969. The original line up of the band consist of Sunil, Nihal, Nimal, Lal, Neville, Noel and Kanthi. Their first hit Linda Langa Sangamaya was released in 1972/1973. Other tracks sung by Sunil Perera include, None Mage Sudu None 1977, Lunu Dehi 1987, Kurumitto, Oye Ojaye 1989, Pity Kotapan None and Signore 1997.
Sunil remains one of the most famous singers in the country, Gypsies remains one of Sri Lanka’s biggest musical franchise yet. A vocalist, guitarist, songwriter and composer, Sunil never failed in addressing current issues of society through humor thus several of his songs have been banned by the state media.
He is the only musician in the local music industry to run a band single handed for more than four decades. Happy birthday Sunil!
